Step 1: Get the dog interested in holding onto a toy

Step 2: Hold the toy gently so the dog doesn’t run off

Step 3: Say “drop it!”

Step 4: Hold a treat right up to the dog’s nose

Step 5: The dog will likely open their mouth after smelling the treat, which allows you to gently take the toy while feeding them the treat

Step 6: Repeat until your dog starts to drop the item before you even bring the treat out -now you can cue ‘drop it’ with just a verbal cue (but still reward the dog when they do let go)!
